Installing Timer
Installation of timer is different for three different cases:
- CD ROM on all computers
- No CD ROM on any computers
- CD ROM on QuickBooks computer but not on some of the local computers.
Any case except the all-CD
case is unlikely. Timer is not a light
program, and any computer that can run it
probably has a CD ROM drive. Minimum
(emphasize minimum) requirements are
486 or better CPU, 8 megabytes of RAM (16
megabytes preferred,) and a hard drive with
at least 12 megabytes free. (The
program space requirement is 8 megabytes on
the hard drive. The additional space is
to allow for data and at least a few other
operations.) Windows 95 or Windows 3.1
is needed. If you are running Windows
3.1 and have only 8 megs of memory, a
permanent windows swap file (virtual memory)
of about 8 megabytes is a good idea.
CD ROM on all computers
is quite simple. Start normal QuickBooks installation by inserting the CD, selecting the CD ROM drive, and clicking the
Install.exe
program. When Install starts, select installation of only Timer, and not of QuickBooks Pro. The default folder (directory) will be
Qbtimer
and accepting it is a good idea.
No CD ROM on any computers is
also simple. Some of the floppy disks included with QuickBooks Pro are Timer Install disks. Insert Timer Install disk 1 in the A: drive. Click the
Start button, then Run
which brings up a dialog box. Type
a:install and press the Enter
key. If you have Windows 3.1, on the menu bar, click
File then Run.
That brings up the same dialog box, where you can enter the
install
command. Follow the instructions on the screen. If the 3.5 inch drive is the B: drive, substitute that for “A:.”
CD ROM on QuickBooks computer
but not all other computers means you will need to make Timer installation disks. Start with three formatted 3.5 inch diskettes, and label them as Timer Install disks 1, 2 and 3. On the computer with QuickBooks installed, insert the QuickBooks CD ROM. Click the
Start button, then Programs
and then the QuickBooks Pro
group. Click on
Create Timer Install Disks. Insert
disk 1 and follow instructions on the
screen. Using Windows 3.1, find the
QuickBooks Pro
program group, and the instructions above should work. Of course, the floppies will have to be 1.44 megabyte high density disks, which are now the garden variety. On the local computers, follow the instructions above.
