QuickBooks 5.0

A wide choice of basic forms is enumerated if you click Lists|Templates.  Any custom form builds on one of the basic form types.  Customizing a form is a work of graphics art, and requires ability with graphics.  The computer is merely a convenience.   The product invoice is used as an example after the list is displayed.  Here are instructions for making a new invoice template XE "template"  with the idea that the first one will be for learning.  Once you have a handle on the process, forms can be produced for actual use.

Intuit Product Invoice should be highlighted.

Click Template button, then Duplicate.

DUP:  Intuit Product Invoice has been added to the list. Click to select it.

Click Template|Edit.   The form name will be highlighted, and may be changed. If you assume that the first try will be unusable, performance anxiety is less likely to hold you back.  Type in a name, and I suggest Learning.   Later, do it again for real, with a permanent name.

Options tab is a good place to start, so click there.  It is last because it was added last, but the information should be handled first. (Aside from that, it is unique to QuickBooks 5, and the section below this is common to several versions.)

Company Name XE "company name:printing on forms"  and Company Address should be printed onto the forms, if they are not already there. Some people print onto letterhead.

Logo can be printed, if it is set up correctly.  A logo XE "logo:printing on forms"  can be made up in a graphics editing program, and must be saved as a Microsoft Windows Bitmap (.BMP) file.    QuickBooks for Windows does not copy in the whole file, it records the file address. Consequently, if the file is moved, logo selection must be updated.

Unless you are printing in color, the artwork should be drawn in black and white.  The logo becomes an object in Layout Designer, where it can be moved or made larger or smaller.  Half-tone gray or fine patterns may not do well in reduction. Most importantly, when incorporating a logo, do not let the computer know that you are in a hurry!  Allow time to work with it and get what you want. Make some trial prints onto blank paper.

Fonts (styles and sizes of type) can be  XE "type font:invoice"  XE "font:invoice" selected for six different functions on an invoice.  Label is the title of a data field, which QuickBooks will print onto every form using this template.  Data is the information entered for the invoice recording one sale.  Color can be used, if you have a color printer.
